Definitions!

I have put together a list of definitions for LGBTQ+ orientations and general terminology! I believe it's important to take the time to learn and understand different orientations and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community. I hope to add to this list more in future. If you have an orientation or term you would like me to add, don't hesitant to contact me!

Disclaimer: I do not speak for the entirety of the LGBTQ+ community. I can only write from my own experiences and the research I have done.

There is an ongoing debate whether or not intersex people are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Some say it is, others say it isn't, however I believe that no one speaks up for the entirety of the community. I have included the intersex flag in our pride collections as I wholehearted believe that LGBTQ or not, people deserve to be proud of who they are. People should be allowed to be proud of their intersex identity even if they do not personally feel like they are LGBTQ+.

Orientations!

Agender - Someone who identifies as neither male or female but as genderless or neutral. People may also use the terms gender neutral, neutrois or genderless to describe being agender.

Aromantic - Also shortened to aro, is a term used to describe someone who experiences little to no romantic attraction! It can be used as an umbrella term for other aro-spectrum identities, such as greyromantic, demiromantic, lithromantic, etc.  It is often confused with asexuality. Autocorrect often changes to aromatic.

Aroace - Someone who is both aromantic and asexual (experiences no romantic and no sexual attraction).

Asexual - Also referred to as 'ace', is a term used to describe someone who experiences little to no sexual attraction! It can also be used as an umbrella term for other ace-spectrum identities, such as greysexual, demisexual, lithsexual, etc.  It is often confused with aromanticism.

Bigender - Someone who identifies with two gender identities (for example: male and female or male and agender, etc.)

Bisexual -  Often shortened to Bi, being bisexual is experiencing attraction towards two or more genders! This can include having an attraction towards nonbinary genders and not having attraction towards men or women!

Demiboy - Someone who partly identifies as a male, often paired with (but not always) a nonbinary identity.

Demigender - Partially identifying as a gender but not fully or not fully aligning to a specific gender (eg. male, female, nonbinary, etc.).

Demigirl - Someone who partly identifies as a female, often paired with (but not always) a nonbinary identity.

Demiromantic - Experiencing romantic attraction after they have formed a deep, emotional connection to that person. This identity falls under the 'aromantic umbrella'.

Demisexual - Experiencing sexual attraction after they have formed a deep, emotional connection to that person. This identity falls under the 'asexual umbrella'.

Gay - Experiencing attraction to the same gender.

Genderfluid - Someone who's gender identity varies between two or more genders, or is 'fluid'. A genderfluid person's identity may change between binary and nonbinary genders.

Genderflux - Someone who's gender identity varies or fluctuates in intensity. Someone who is genderflux may feel genderless (0% intensity), then like as a demigender (50% intensity) then peak to a whole gender (100%). Genderflux is often confused with genderfluid.

Genderqueer - Someone who identifies outside or male and female, similar to nonbinary. This is often used as an umbrella term and an individual identity.

Greyromantic - Experiencing romantic attraction very rarely or under particular circumstances. This identity falls under the 'aromantic umbrella'.

Greysexual - Experiencing sexual attraction very rarely or under particular circumstances. This identity falls under the 'asexual umbrella'.

Intersex - Someone who is born with characteristics that don't fit typical definitions of male and female (for example: genital appearance, chromosomes, hormone production, internal sex anatomy and/or uncommon experiences with puberty).

Lithromantic - Experiencing romantic attraction but having the feelings fade once reciprocated. This identity falls under the 'aromantic umbrella'.

Lithsexual - Experiencing sexual attraction but having the feelings fade once reciprocated. This identity falls under the 'asexual umbrella'.

Lesbian - Experiencing attraction towards women by women or fem-aligned people!

Nonbinary - Often assumed to be 'neutral' like agender, identifying as nonbinary is actually identifying anywhere out of the gender binary (male and female). Nonbinary is used as an umbrella term (for genders such as agender, genderfluid, etc.) and as an individual orientation!

Omnisexual - Experiencing attraction towards all genders, however gender factors into attraction! It is compared to pansexuality; however, it is different.

Pansexual - Experiencing attraction regardless of gender! It is often compared to bisexuality, and while they have similarities, they are different orientations.

Polysexual - Also referred to as 'ply' for short, it is often confused with polyamory. Being polysexual is experiencing attraction towards more than two, but not all, genders! This can also include having an attraction towards all genders except your own!

Queer - Though often used as an umbrella term, it's a perfectly valid label to identify with! Queer can refer to having a non-heterosexual orientation, non-cisgender identity or both! It can also refer to people who are questioning!

Transgender - Identifying with a gender outside of their assigned gender at birth. This includes nonbinary genders!

Trigender - Someone who experiences three genders, either at once or in fluctuation.

Acespec - Short for 'asexual spectrum'. Is different to arospec/aromantic spectrum.

AFAB - Short for assigned female at birth.

AGAB - Short for assigned gender at birth.

Pronouns - Used to address a person (for example: he/him, she/her, they/them)

Queer - Once used as a slur, it has been reclaimed by people of the community and used as a way to describe their orientations. Some people still consider it a slur or are not comfortable to describe themselves by that word, so it's important to clarify with people before assuming.
